Yesterday three Red-tailed Hawks on a UW-Madison campus ledge
contemplating the edge
and their first fledge*
WI hawks over the edge

A few minutes later, two Red-tailed Hawks on ledge
peering over the edge
as they ponder the sibling that just fledged
WI h awk spreading wings

Today, the one remaining hawk on that ledge,
not overly close to the edge
yet most probably contemplating fledge
last WI hawk to fledge original

fledge* (from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology): the time at which nestlings that are reared in the nest
leave the nest, even though their flight abilities may not yet be well developed.

I cannot tell you how much I love that 3rd picture. I know I'm anthropomorphizing, but that hawk looks SO CONTEMPLATIVE. He is going through his own coming-of-age story right there on that ledge. The weight of his future is hanging on his wings.

That poor little guy struggled all day today. I had the screen on (while also watching the Cornell hawk cam in which a third hawk there has yet to fledge) and this one here was panting to regulate body temp. A parent brought food but all this one wanted was to get under the parent's body for shade but parent wouldn't allow it. I left to go on a 20 minute walk and came home to an empty screen. This guy fledged about two hours ago while I was gone. I'm thinking lots of good thoughts for him/her.

Thank you for reading the little story and letting me know you enjoyed the photo, Jenn. :)

What a fabulous video! Thanks for the photos and for sharing the video. I could so identify with Runt and his crisis of confidence.

I'm so glad you liked the video, Barb. I'm betting a lot of us identify with that little hawk and the crisis of confidence. But away he flew! With confidence!

Getting real and leaving the nest
User writerjenn referenced to your post from Getting real and leaving the nest saying: [...] story. And I want to share a real-life coming-of-age story that's up on Tracy Abell's blog [...]
